The weight of a Mahogany door is about the same as a Burma Teak door. If a Mahogany door is made out of mature timber, seasoned properly, the moisture content is within 10-12 % chemically treated, manufactured using advanced technology, should last at least 100 years. Mahogany timber is very friendly in machining, finishing and hand carving. If the thickness is maintained at 38-44 mm, the door will not bend in normal conditions.
Cutting Burma teak with carbide blade sharpness usually lasts 24-48 hours. While cutting Mahogany sharpness usually last about 3 times longer. When we cut the Mahogany trees from a matured forest, we get all different sizes of timber, like small and bigger, in diameter. At the same age range smaller the tree denser the timber, larger the treeless denser is the timber. When we cut lumber for the frames, we usually cut it from a smaller tree, because the frame needs to be stronger.
For the door, we pick smaller timber, for the styles and rails. Inside planks usually come from larger trees, because they need to be wider. When the Mahogany comes from the commercially harvested forest the length in 7′ section doesn’t vary much from root to tip. So we get much better production. Mahogany doors are strong, sturdy, beautiful and lot cheaper because we are getting it locally.
Mahogany timber takes a lot less seasoning time than Gamary or Shil Karai. The only problem with the Mahogany timber is when it gets in touch with water, a strong Mahogany color comes out and messes up the floor tiles.
If we want to use the Mahogany door in the veranda, or in the washroom, where there is a lot of exposure of water, we have to make sure we paint the door with waterproof paint, which will protect the door from water, sun and Mahogany color to come out.
Mahogany doors usually get darker within a year or two. It turns close to a chocolate color. In the beginning, it doesn’t look too good when the time passes it gets prettier.
